What a day….

Published by ruthie at 3:45 pm under harry Potter Unit, our day, finding what works

The windows are open and the sun is shining in here at our house. The beautiful weather makes us want to be outside. There is nothing better than doing “school” by an open window with the smell of Sweet Williams wafting through or reading to the kids while laying in the hammock or on a sheet in the shade of our pecan tree. I love spring.. and its seems the timing has been perfect for our studies to coincided with the season :) 869096.JPG

In “Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day” our Science text we are reading about birds. The last few lessons have covered nesting abilities, mating rituals, the parts of an egg, how the baby grows in the egg and hatches. We have enjoyed filling and refilling our bird feeder and seeing what birds gather around. Our backyard has been visited by Bluejays, Blackbirds, Sparrows, Finches, Cardinals, and Dove (two types). We have been blessed by a nest Robins have placed directly above our tree swing! and we all hope that we will be able to watch them raise a little family. I was thrilled with a find at a local garage sale of Gourds that we will use to make bird houses out of.. and will post pictures as soon as we are done :)

We are looking forward to next week when we will start our study of bats! (hopefully this will workout well so we can see the bats when we go to New Mexico for a family vacation in May :)

History is flying by.. (pardon the pun) today we read another story of King Richard and his brother John. The kids loved the excerpt from Robin Hood that was given in our text.

The boys took turned reading today from “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” which Nate decided he would read. I read this story to the kids when Nate was a baby so he doesnt remember the story.

We made a quick trip to the library this morning. Cat came home with Lewis Carrol’s Jabberwocky and Alice and Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. She also found two other fun poetry books …They also picked out several DVDs to watch, some science, some just entertaining. :)

Daddy is continuing to read Harry Potter to the kids almost every night. They are almost finished with book 5. I love sitting and listening in while he reads and hearing the kids ask “what does that mean” or “what is that” OR.. the best part.. Gasps and all out LOUD laughter coming from the living room. What great memories for the kids! What fun!

On the list for tomorrow is a trip to the zoo, track practice, and hopefully enjoying more time outside in this great weather! I would also like to make a trip out to our local bird watching area (in the next few weeks) to see some humming birds in action before we end our section on birds!

thanks for reading!

(please note that even if I dont mention it with every post.. we do cover Math, Spelling, Handwriting/English too.. We also cover lots of other things but if i listed all the times the kids asked and answered their own questions I would be typing at the computer all day instead of reading, cleaning, saving the neighbors rabbit from two stray dogs, missing out on all the fun investigating that goes on with the kids! :) LOL.
