No School Bus Rush here

Published by ruthie at 8:15 pm under resources-links, accidental Learning, our day

As the school bus stopped outside our home to pick up the neighborhood children I said a prayer of thanksgiving that my children and I were not in the school bus rush to get out the door and off to school. I woke up up “early” this morning and was surprised to see 2 of my 3 kidos already up and in the living room enjoying some pbs. We would usually have been off to track which starts at 7am but the littlest was sick on Sunday so we chose to stay at home and let him rest.

Our day was filled with learning… heres a bit of a list of things we learned today:

  • How to draw an insect and its correct body parts (well.. they already knew this .. but it was fun for them)
  • Reviewed Ivan the Great and Ivan the Terrible
  • We learned about the Ottoman Empire and the fall of Constantinople
  • We learned about the Lions Gate and others that surround Jerusalem.
  • We read from the book of John the first chapter. The children chose to have this book be our course of study this fall as it is the Book they will cover in Bible Bowl this year. Each child took turns reading and it was great to hear how much improved my sweet Jo’s reading has become!
  • I went over math with each child and Cat reviewed some of the lessons on the DVD from Math U See.
  • For Science today the kids made Pitfall traps for insects in our back yard. Click hereĀ
  • Cat did some extra reading from the World book and learned many things.. one she mentioned to me was about the Whale Shark being larger than the African Elephant. Below is a video we enjoyed:

  • We are now in the final rotation of our new Chore Assignments and today all the children officially know how to clean each designated area. Now each is totally responsible for their entire area .. be it floors, mirrors, patio, dishes, laundry, toilets, or bathtubs… it has worked out fantastically and leaves me time to focus on detailed cleaning like closets, under beds, or other projects :)

so..

I come today being thankful for our slower paced life and not having to catch the bus. A life of learning to love learning, problem solving, and exploration. I love the fact that at the end of each day the children learn far more that I anticipated and are even more exited to find out new things tomorrow.

As I sit alone in our den I can hear the silence of the house and the drama in the voice of my husband as he reads aloud to the children in the living room and I realize how very blessed we are.

Until next time
